The Torch of Peace

* Background Information
In 1988, Seoul Olympics was held in Korea. To celebrate the Olympics, the torch was lit at the Chamseongdan Altar in Manisan Mountain, Ganghwa Island, 
where Dangun ritual is held. (Based on traditional mythology, Dangun Ritual is held on his birthday, October the third, to wish a good harvest and peace of family.)
 Praying for world peace, this torch is still lit, symbolizing the nation's ethnicity, modernity, and its development. 

the Chamseongdan Altar in Manisan Mountain : Located at the midpoint of Mt. Baekdu and Mt. Halla, it is the highest in Ganghwa Island, with an altitude of 472.1m. 
It is located at Hwado-myeon, Gangwha-gun, Incheon. In the top of the mountain, there is a shrine for the sky, the Chamseongdan Altar. 
It was built by Dangun, the first king of Gojoseon, and the believed ancestor of the Korean people. On Gaecheonjeol, people still perform ancestral rites at the alter. 
This is the holy ground of the people, where people light the Torches for the National Athletic Competitions every year, including that of Seoul Olympics.

* Artist Statement
At World Peace Gate of Olympic Park, Seoul the Olympic Flame is still burning. as a symbol of the nation's ethnicity, modernity, and its development. 
I decided to steal this holy flame, bring it to my studio to criticize with new questions through it. The stolen flame was stored using candle. 
During the storage, candle melted to the bottom of the storage box, producing cubes. I carved these cubes to transform them into Pigeons of Peace. 
Furthermore, with this holy flame I melted sugar to make Dalgona. (Dalgona is a candy that is popular since 1960's. Sellers typically sat on the street 
in front of elementary schools or at neighborhood alleys. It is made of sugar and baking soda. It is very fragile.) 
This Dalgona was distributed to others as a performance.

A performance to make Dalgona with the Torch of Peace and share it with spectators

* Dalgona : A candy that is popular since 1960's. Sellers typically sat on the street in front of elementary schools or at neighborhood alleys.
 It is made of sugar and baking soda. It is very fragile.

* Dalgona sold on the street are stamped with various shapes such as star and heart. With the shape as a guide, Dalgona was torn to eat. 
I stamped a shape of flame to my Dalgona to share.
